The Heritage of a Church

Population boom in the Saint Aloysius Parish, Jersey City, prompted the founding of another parish in 1916. A small factory lot was converted and the first Mass of Our Lady of Victories Parish was celebrated in April 22, 1917. Subsequently the church received its first pastor in 1919.

Ground breaking for a new church was held on May 7, 1922 and the corner stone was set on September 24, 1922. The OLV school on the other hand was opened on September 30, 1930 by the Sisters of Charity.

Increase in the membership of Our Lady of Victories led to the church's basement conversion to provide more Masses and a new convent was erected.

In the 1970s, the Sisters of Charity withdrew from the school and were replaced by a staff of lay teachers. The years that followed brought many changes in the school.

Today...

Today OLV continues to be an innovative, future oriented institution proudly serving the archdiocese and the community. As the parish celebrates its 90th anniversary (in 2007), it remembers its past with gratitude and makes plans to secure its future.
